Global Citizenship – Marine Environment
This year we are working towards the renewal of our ‘Global Citizenship – Marine Environment’ flag. This flag focuses on the importance of the Marine environment, and promoting ways to protect the seas, oceans and their plants and animals. One of the main ways we can do this is by reducing plastic waste. The Global Goals for Sustainable Development are a key aspect of this theme. (For more information on the Sustainable Development Goals visit https://sdgs.un.org/goals.)
Our students have carried out amazing work on this theme so far. Here is a list of some of our actions so far:
A neighbourhood cleanup to pick up any litter, which could eventually make it’s way into the ocean.
A beach clean, carried out by our 3rd to 6th class students on Portmarnock beach.
Litter Pickers Project
We sponsored a seal called ‘St. Patrick in 2023, who was rescued after being injured in the ocean. He was eventually released back into the wild!
A project by our 5th and 6th class students to find out what happens to different materials when they are left in the water.
3rd class did an experiment to find out how easy it is to clean oil from water.
1st to 4th class are taking part in the Sea Keepers Project, to learn about different plants and animals in the ocean.
Junior and Senior Infants learned about Whales.
Our Green School’s Committee is currently carrying out a campaign to encourage our students to use reusable bottles at school and home to cut back on plastic waste, which often accidentally ends up in the ocean.
